Berger De Picard

One of the oldest French sheep-herding dogs, possibly introduced by the Celts, the Berger De Picard is closely related to the Beauceron and Briard. The breed has been, for many years, and still is a flock worker in the Pas-de-Calais region by the Somme in the north of France. Although the breed became endangered during the two World Wars, its easy care and happy, though mischievous, temperament have started the Berger De Picard back on the road to recovery. Nevertheless its numbers are still limited, even in its native country.

The rough, tousled coat does not mat or require special care, yielding a rustic appearance. The standard demands that the ears remain small, so they naturally stand erect.

Like many herding breeds, the Berger De Picard require human companionship . . . lots of it, along with exercise . . . lots of it ... and an owner who will provide both. They are rowdy in their play. The Berger De Picard is a versatile worker. With intruders, they alert and stand their ground. Berger De Picard Shepherds receive high ratings in the official French protection sport. A few specimens of this old breed can be found in the USA.
