Dogs have been used for generations for work, hunting, guarding and as companions. There various breeds of dogs all over the world who are descendants of these dogs. They have their ancestor’s characteristics and now have taken on new roles. Most of them are as family dogs. Some dogs have been specially bred to be guard dogs. These dogs need to have some qualities such as powerful body and muscles, an intimidating appearance along with a good bark and fierce reputation. One such breed is the Bandog.
The Bandog originated in the 1200s in England. It was basically used as a guard dog. Its used was varied to property guarding as well as personal guard dog. The breed was recognised in common folk lore as a dog which was bound to a chain during day time and was released during the night to guard the property against intruders. It has a nasty reputation of being fearless and very aggressive.
The Bandog is a very muscular and strong breed. It has been said that they descended from the wolf. This has not been clearly substantiated. It is known that they have been mixed with a lot of breeds of mastiffs and similar looking animals to increase their aggression and power. They are also thought to be descendants of bull baiting dogs and war dogs. These two breeds of dogs are very aggressive and powerful which were absolutely fearless. The general talk of the dog is one of it being ugly, strong, fearless and powerful. The name comes from Bandogge which may refer to the usage of strong bonds and chains to tie them up.
The look of the Bandog is one of fear and aggression. It is muscular and tall and has a comparatively short snout. A tuff or flap of skin hangs on either side of its jaw and most of the time drool or saliva will be dripping out of it. The dog is almost hairless which means they do no need any maintenance. The Bandog is a very ferocious and aggressive dog. Hence they are not very popular pets. They will most probably used for personal protection. They stick very close to their masters who tie them to big strong chains. Any stranger is received with blood curdling growls and barks. This is enough to warn anyone.
They are capable of being well trained and will listen to their masters to the word. This is one of its best qualities. They are also very intelligent and smart. The breed has been used all over the world as a guard dog. The nasty reputation of the Bandog has worked in its favor as well as against it. The dog has been over bred also mixed unnecessarily without giving good thought to the consequences. Hence we see that sometimes these dogs can exhibit the bad qualities of its parents or parent group. This means that while purchasing a Bandog enough thought and time has to be put in to understand its history.
