The coat has evolved from its swimming back ground. A thick coat helps the breed to swim faster in choppy waters. It also has a very good undercoat to protect it from cold. The Barbet dog is a very good and strong breed. It grows to a height of about 58 to 65 cms and has a weight of about 35 to 60 pounds. The breed is a very active one. The coat as has been said is the most key and attractive feature of the Barbet dog. The coat is long, curly and typically woolly. The coat can grow very long and requires a lot of grooming and maintenance. If it is not trimmed regularly the Barbet will shed tufts of hair unevenly.

The Barbet breed has a set of colors which are typical. It includes black, brown, grey, fawn, pale fawn and sometimes white. The coat also shows shading. The preferred shading should be a lighter shade of the main coat color. The color of all new born Barbets are either black or brown and with white markings on the chest and legs.

The Barbet breed is noted for its jovial and cool temperament. The breed is obedient, companionable and affectionate. Hence the suit the role of a family dog very well. They need a lot of obedience training as they are very playful, if that nature is not controlled well it can prove a handful. The breed is smart and is willing to learn, and it learns very quickly. They are also one of the few breed which is very good with smaller children and elders alike.

The Barbet is prone to illnesses. They are very few in number all over the world and they show long term afflictions on a regular basis. They exhibit a tendency to contract ear infections, hernias, hip problems and epilepsy. The cross breeding of poodles into the gene pool has affected the health status of the Barbet breed to a large extent. The health of the breed is fragile and gentle care and nurturing is required. They are sensitive to harsh environments even though they have a good coat.

The Barbet has also been used on shows because of their beauty and intelligence. They have gotten into their routine as family dogs very well.
