The cross breeding of poodles into the gene pool has affected the health status of the Barbet breed to a large extent. The health of the breed is fragile and gentle care and nurturing is required. They are sensitive to harsh environments even though they have a good coat.

The Barbet has also been used on shows because of their beauty and intelligence. They have gotten into their routine as family dogs very well.
