Bavarian Mountain Hound
![]() |
The Bavarian Mountain Hound originates from Germany. They were used by the Germans since the middle ages to track down wounded pray as these dogs are a type of scent hounds. They are a cross between a Hanover Hound and the Bavarian Hound. In Germany, they are also known as Bayerischer. But their name from the time they originated also happens to be Gebirgsschweißhund.
They have an elongated and a strong head. Their skull structure is slightly domed and it is quite broad too. Their nose bridge is slightly curved too. Their muzzle is solid with wide jaws and their mouths are fully covered by their lips. They have wide nostrils as compared to the other breeds and their ears are placed high on their heads. The ears are heavy and dense round at the tips and broader at the base. They have a rectangular shape to their body unlike the square shape that most other breeds have. Their length is always longer than their height; this is what gives them the rectangular shape. Their neck is pretty strong and of average length and they have a very well developed chest too. It has a solid back and the chest is wide and well developed too. The tail is placed up high on the body and they come in medium lengths.
The healthy and the fit Bavarian Mountain Hounds weigh around 20 to 25 kg. The male Bavarian Mountain Hounds stand tall at 18.5 to 20.5 inches (47 to 52 cm) and their female counter parts stand tall at 17 to 19 inches (44 to 48 cm). They have a very short coat and it lies flat against the body. It is glossy and thick and there is a little roughness to it. It gets finer at the ears and heads of the dog. The under belly of the dog has longer and harsher hair on it. It’s the same with the hair on the legs and tail too. They come in various colours and shades of black masked fawn.
They are very calm, poised, quiet and obedient as a breed. They get easily attached to their masters and have an urge to please them in every way possible. When they get into their hunting instincts they are razor focussed on their duties of catching the lost trail of the wounded prey. They are hard and rugged and any rough terrain is not a threat to them. They are very fast in finding prey as their body is very agile and fast.
Some other characteristics of The Bavarian Mountain Hounds are that they are very brave and courageous and full of spirit. Any Bavarian Mountain Hound can be trained to be excellent in hunting, but they need a very skilled and a patient trainer. They aren’t suited for living indoors in the city or for any sort of city life in general. They like open spaces and their share of daily exercises to keep them healthy and fit and happy.
