Bearded Collie

Bearded Collie

The Bearded Collie, also known as the Beardie by many was a very popular breed of dog among the Scottish shepherds. They were originally used as breeding dogs and are very good family companions now a days. The roughly weigh around 40-60 pounds and have a litter size of 7.

They were originally used to herd both cattle and sheep. They were bred to be working dogs that were capable of withstanding the harshest conditions. They were also bread to be reliable and strong enough as they had to work around with tough sheep all the time. This original breed of rough tough Bearded Collies are very less these days, chances are they just don’t exist anymore in most parts of the world.

Thanks to the visions of a few shepherds, Peter Wood, Tom Muirhead, Brains Plummer to name a few, looks like the working Bearded Collies does exist after all, but in very small numbers under the breeders. They are very popular now days and are even being exported to U S A and Australia. To make sure that these working breeds do not diminish, The Working Bearded Collie Society was established.

The working Beardies are a very enthusiastic breed and requires a lot of fostering and good structure. They use their bark, body and bounce to move and gather stock. According to the American Kennel club, they rank at 104 in popularity in the United States out of a total of 155 breeds. They make for excellent pets. In general they are full of energy and need a lot of grooming.

Brushing their coat off at least once a week is a must. You can try to maintain a puppy cut look on them by having shorter hair, but they would still need brushing every once in a while. As a breed they are full of high energy and were seem to have originated in the highlands of Scotland.

They make for excellent family pets as they are very friendly and can make you and your family happy to have them as a companion for years to come. You would be amused to watch them use their intelligence at solving problems around the household. They have very long hair and it can be a little tough to wash and dry them up. The female Bearded Collies are the ones who are more alive and outgoing and ready for fun than their male counter parts. But it is very often seen that it’s the males who follow instruction better and hence are a better option if you want to train them. The females are definitely the more dominating once and don’t like being told what to do. But no matter what the sex of the dog, they still have all the high energy in them.
