Breeds of dogs are very varied and diverse. Dogs were initially bred to do a lot of work. Due to their nature to please they were ready to work. The Berger Picard is one such herding dog.
The Berger Picard is a very muscular and active dog. The origin of this dog is from France. They are a very rare breed. They faced near extinction during the world wars and are still very rare to come about to this day. The dog has a very rustic mutt appearance. It is cute as well as good looking. This dog has some very admirable qualities that set them apart from the herd.
They are medium sized. They have a very strong and muscular body which is longer than it is taller. The ears of the dog are erect and this shows their herding qualities. They needed to be alert and ready at all times. They have very distinctive eye brows which are thick. This is a trade mark look. The coat of this dog is rough and crisp to the touch. It is an all weather coat. They have two colours which are grey and fawn. These will have various shades too.
The Berger Picard is a very lively and active dog. It has some very desirable qualities. They have a personality of their own which comes out as intelligent and understanding. They are very loyal and ready to please. Training is a very important part of their upbringing without which they can become aggressive. They need plenty of exercise. They are always looking out for fun but do their thing only if they are allowed to. This is a very good habit. They are clever and learn tricks very easily. This is the reason they are featured in many dog shows and have won accolades for their stunts. Berger Picard is a very fast and agile dog and hence they are faster than many dogs.
They have changed well into their new role as house pets. They are still used all over the world as herding dogs and still excel at their job. They need human company all the time and hence are very comfortable in social situations. They are not excessive barkers but are very protective of their area of concern. Hence they are very good guard dogs. Since the breed has not been over bred they do not have many health problems. If they are not exercised regularly they will develop muscle wasting. Hip dysplasia is also seen in them.
The Berger Picard is a very strong and capable breed that has developed into a very good house dog. They are loyal, playful and good companions.
