Bernese mountain dog

Bernese mountain dog

The most interesting feature about dogs is that they come in a variety of shapes and sizes. This means that we can find a dog that suits or requirement. They are really small dogs which weigh just about a few pounds and some dogs are massive and really heavy. Most dogs which are famous as pets have a minimum height and weight. Some dogs are a bit bigger and heavier than most. These dogs will generally be mountain dogs. The reason for this is that they live on hilly terrain were the climate as well as the landscape needs them to be big. One such big dog is the Bernese mountain dog.

This dog is also called the Berner Sennenhund in Swiss. They are originally from the Swiss Alps. The name Bernese comes from the area of their origin which is the Canton of Berne in Switzerland. These dogs are basically farm dogs. They were used as multi purpose dogs. Sometimes they were used as draft animals and for pulling carts. This shows us that they are large.

They are heavy, large dogs which have a very recognisable and well coloured coat. It is tricoloured. They are black with a white chest. They also have brown markings on the side of their mouth, legs and some on their chest too. They have this very bright white colour on their chest which stands out in contrast to their body colour. They have v shaped ears which are drooping down towards their mouth. They are about 23 to 27 inches in height and weigh in at around 29 to 55 kilograms which is more for a dog. They have a very smooth and wavy coat which is not very difficult to maintain.

The Bernese mountain dog is a very docile and mild natured dog. They are very self assured and have a very regal and majestic look. It becomes very strong due to their height and presence. Large dogs are generally scary but the Bernese mountain dog is the very opposite. They are well behaved in gatherings and crave human attention. The breed needs to be trained well when they are young. Since they were used as farm animals they have no problems adjusting with other pet animals. Though they are good pets they need time to think. Their intelligence is not their strong point. The affection that they show is very warm and loving. They will lean against the person, sit on their legs, and rub themselves against their owners trying to elicit attention.

They need a lot more room than the normal dog. A big open space is a bonus for this dog. They are very playful and energetic. They need a lot of exercise and attention. Since they are not very intelligent they also are very slow to reach maturity. They will take around 2 to 2 and half years to reach maturity. The large and heavy Bernese mountain dog is a very good pet. They have become very popular now though they are rare.
