Black and Tan Coonhound

Black and Tan Coonhound

The Black and Tan Coonhound is a type of Scent Hound dog. They were bred mainly to trail down raccoons and are a cross between a Black And Tan Virginia Foxhound and a Bloodhound. They have a very strong sense of smell and are able to track down the game entirely by the trail of scent they leave behind. The size and the courage of these breeds as dog also make them capable of hunting down big games like deer or even bear. They show all signs of alertness and agility and power at first glance. They happen to be very fast runners, even compared to other breed of dogs with a leaner build and they can cover huge distance very easily. The unique characteristic of these dogs are that, each of them have a very distinct voice than the other, so it’s easy for their owners to recognise them from their bark from a far off distance itself.

Unlike most dogs that have all black eyes, the Black and Tan Coonhound has hazel eyes. They have long ears. Since they are set low on the dogs head and happen to be thin at the same time, they keep hanging well below the dog’s neck. Their colour coat combination is very much like that of a Rottweiler or a Doberman Pinscher, but there is one thing that differentiates them from these similar looking breeds- The long tail. It is set slightly lower at the back and happens to be in a right angle position when the dog gets exited. They even have a very different bark as compared to the rest of the dogs. The legs on the Black and Tan Coonhound re very long and not in proportion to the size of the body, this is one of the reasons they are able run faster and cover huge distances without getting tired.

They stand tall at around 58 to 69 cm (23 to 27 inches). They have a huge head too, it varies anywhere between 20 to 25 cm (8 to 10 inches) when measure from the tip of the nose to the back of the skull. Like most average sized dogs, a full grown and a healthy Black and Tan Coonhound would weigh between 29 to 59 kg (65 to 130 pounds) and the males are heavy built and taller than their female counter parts like most breeds.

The lack of any human companionship and physical exercise is the reason they happen to suffer from separation anxiety most of the times, this is the reason they end up howling to themselves when left alone or even end up being destructive at extreme cases. Since they are a type of Scent Hounds, they keep smelling and processing scent that comes by them, and if the smell seems interesting, their trailing instincts kick in and they go chasing the scent, hence it’s never a good idea take them off the leash in open places and fields.
