Bluetick Coonhound

Bluetick Coonhound

The Bluetick Coonhound is type of coonhound. They are normally bred in the southern part of United States. They have a doomed skull with a broad head. Their muzzle is long, broad, deep and square in shape. They have large dark brown eyes. Their ears are thing and set pretty low on the sides of the head, this is the reason they keep dangling next to their faces. They have straight legs, unlike the other breed of dogs that have a slightly bent pair of legs. They have hind legs that are more muscular and longer compared to the front legs. Their long dewclaws are usually trimmed and their toes are arched. They stand tall at around 51 to 69 cm (20 to 27 inches) and weigh in at around 20 to 36 kg (45 to 80 pounds).

The Bluetick Coonhounds have a smooth and glossy coat. It is dense and short and gives you a coarse feeling if you were to feel them. The colour on their coat is of dark blue. This blue effect is formed due to the growth of black hairs over a white background. Most of the Bluetick Coonhounds have a black head and ear, but in most cases they also come with ton markings on their faces. The AKC leans more towards Bluetick Coonhounds with more of blue and less of black on their colour coats.

Bluetick Coonhounds are an intelligent breed and remain very devoted to their families. This is why many prefer them to be excellent companion dogs. They like to play with children around the household and get used to living indoors quite easily. They also make for good guardian dogs. They tend to get a bit aggressive towards other dogs if they aren’t well socialised from a young age itself. The owners of Bluetick Coonhounds also need to be firm in giving orders. These are very good in hunting; hence do not leave them alone with other pets of the house.

The breed is known for its attentive and extremely alert nature and is capable of working hard, no matter what the terrain or the weather ends up being. It is highly advisable not to unleash them in open parks and other unsafe areas. Since they have a very keen sense of smell, they can start following the scent on their own and can be gone doing this for hours together. They all have a very distinctive voice than the other and most owners can easily recognise their dogs just by the voices. They have a fearless and brave approach towards the game while hunting, this is the reason they are even used to track down cougar and foxes.

The Bluetick Coonhounds are known to drool around a lot, and are not very suited for apartment lives. They tend to get inactive if they stay indoors for long, and will need a backyard at least to run around and to keep their scenting and trailing abilities in check.
