The Boerboel is a South African breed of dog that was bred for guarding purposes. It is a large breed of dog with strong territorial instincts. This heavy mastiff breed of dog is characterized by its sandy colour and black mask. The standard height for a boerboel is 59-65cms for a female and 64-70cms for a male. The Boerboel is the most protective breed of dog but is still not aggressive. They are intelligent and obedient dogs with high domestic territoriality. Their nature makes them dominant and confident but still in the need for some human companionship. Like any other large animal they have destructive tendencies and become reckless and dangerous when left alone for a prolonged period of time.
The Boerboel is required to have a strong, substantial and well balanced appearance. They should have a tight and solid musculature overall with a good amount of robustness. These dogs are not loose jointed or loose limbed even though they are a mastiff breed that is heavily built. The neck is very powerful originating from their strong topline. The Boerboel should be able to move with control and purpose and good amount of agility. The one defining characteristic in this breed of dog lies in its head. The Boerboel’s head should ideally be large but still in proportion with the rest of their body. They have strong jaws with a muzzle that is not too short.
They should have tight flews and should be quite broad between the ears. They normally have a docked tail but this is not among the prescribed requirements for their breed. These dogs give an impression of power, substance and overall physical ability and strength.
The ideal height for a male boerboel is 66cm, varying between 64-70cms. For the female the ideal height is 61cms but can also vary from 59-65 cms. Their average weight varies from 45kgs to 90kgs.The boeerboel comes in a wide range of colours from red, yellow cream ,dilute ,brown ,fawn ,brindle ,red brown, black and even white cream. There are a limited number of Boerboels with a little bit of white on their necks, legs, chest and head. A deep mask is appreciated for all boerboel’s.
Like any other animal this breed also suffers its share of health problems. Some of the common illnesses that a boerboel is often treated for are wobblers’ disease, Thyroid problems, elbow and hip dysplasia, heart issues, eye problems, various allergies, vaginal hyperplasia and even bloat. On the bright side this dog has a life expectancy of 12 years.
As a domestic pet the boerboel needs its space and an apartment is not the recommended place of stay for this breed. These dogs should have the freedom to play and run around in a large where they can enjoy a good game of ball. As these dogs are very protective and territorial, they do not take well to strangers. It is recommended not to leave your boerboel alone for a long period of time as they thrive with human companions.
The Boerboel is an excellent watchdog and intelligent animal. They are fearless but still responsive to family needs. These dogs live for attention and love from their owners.
