The Chodsky pest, more commonly known as the Bohemian Shepherd, is nationally recognized in the Czech Republic. This is a dog of medium size with a tail just about as long as its body. They have a well proportioned, sturdy, and compact build giving the dog an overall look of physical harmony. The bohemian shepherd has an elegant neckline with an extended long and marked lush furry body. Their ears are high set, erect, pointed and small in size. The majority of the shepherd puppies are identical in almost all their features. The shepherd puppies have a change of colour in their coats which appears after they are 6 months old. These dogs are able to withstand several fluctuations in the weather due to their double layered coat which is rich, long, and luscious.
The Bohemian Shepherd is characterized by their fluffy and furry coats that are noticeable from a far distance. Some of the dogs only have a medium length coat. Black and tan is the only acceptable colour for the Bohemian Shepherds’ coat.
For owners who are very active the Bohemian Shepherd is an excellent choice for a house pet. These dogs are extremely intelligent and possess high levels of energy with a great drive to please. They are quick learners and are easily obedience trained. The Bohemian Shepherd excels in its performance of service training, rescuing, as well as agility. The shepherd is a very patient, non aggressive and understanding dog. They are very good with children, other pets and even other dogs. This breed of dog can often be used as a working dog for helping handicapped people. These dogs are very territorial and hence make excellent watch dogs. The Bohemian Shepherd possesses a calm and even temperament that is stable and free from aggression and nervous behaviour. This characteristic can be traced back to their good breeding.
Bohemian Shepherds have an array of talents that come to them quite naturally. These talents include herding, rescue work, sledding, and guiding. These dogs like any other dogs of their breed require a good amount of training and keen interest in their character building to bring forth their inborn abilities. They range in size from 19 to 22 inches, weighing in at about 35 to 55 pounds.
The Bohemian Shepherd enjoys a good general health with not many illnesses plaguing its life. They are active and sporty dogs that enjoy long walks and games like fetch. These dogs have an excellent nose and are hence used for rescue work or en as police dogs for sniffing out illegal substances and bombs.
Dogs such as Bohemian Shepherds are very easy to maintain even though they have furry coats. They require little or no grooming with barely any maintenance. These dogs however have one major flaw in the fact that they are very heavy and seasonal shedders. These dogs require a large yard for frequent exercise and physical and mental stimulation. They enjoy human companionship and large families.
