The Bolognese dog is a small breed that originated from the Bichon type having its roots in Italy. Experts say that this breed has been around for a long time, probably since the 1400’s. This dog for originally bred to catch mice. The Bolognese is a popular dog that makes a wonderful little companion.
The Bolognese is a little dog that is covered in a white coat that is quite long. They are stocky square proportioned and small dogs. They have a head of medium length with a muzzle that is rather square like in appearance. Their jaws feature even white teeth that tend to meet in a scissor like bite. They have alert eyes that are a dark ochre colour. Their eyes are well opened and show an array of expressions. The ears of the Bolognese are set considerably high on their head with long ears that tend to hang. They have a small curved tail that is carried over to their back. Experts’ best describe the gait of this breed as easy and free. The muzzle consists of short white hair as opposed to the long pure white coat with quite long hair spread throughout the body of the Bolognese. Their coat has a brilliant fluffy texture that has no flat lying tendencies. They have a very distinctive coat that is a single layer and falls in tight ringlets all over the body. The hair is not very silky but wooly instead and is never clipped or even trimmed.
The Bolognese sheds very little hair but to prevent matting and frizzing regular combing is required. To keep the coat in top form a monthly grooming is also recommended along with bathing, ear cleaning and nail trimming. For owners surfing from allergies the Bolognese is the perfect pet as they shed little to no hair. Though the dog is small it still enjoys a nice daily walk and good game of fetch. This will suffice in meeting the dogs exercise needs. This breed of dog is ideal for dog lovers staying in an apartment as the Bolognese does not require a large yard to run around in. The Bolognese is a little difficult to house train but once trained will be very obedient. This breed of dog much like other small dogs has a tendency to bark a lot and be quite noisy.
The Bolognese is a friendly yet quite a serious dog. They are active but not overly so. Though little in size the Bolognese love family life, they are closely bound with their owners and have a need to be a part of everything the family does. The Bolognese is timid by nature and hence it is important to keep the dog actively social at a young age so that they will interact well with strangers. They love being around children and enjoy being the centre of all attention. The Bolognese has a life span of 14 years, with very few illnesses to worry about.
