CAROLINA DOG

Sometime, perhaps 8,000 years ago, dogs of the southern/pariah type migrated across the Bering Strait to the Western World with Asian travelers. These dogs spread the length and breadth of the Hemisphere, laying the foundation for a variety of types and breeds. In western Canada, the Tahltan Bear Dog was of pure pariah type. In the Maritime Provinces to the east, "Indian curs" contributed to the formation of the St. John's retrieving dogs. They also probably formed the basis for the miniaturized and hairless dogs of South America.
