Besides the previously described French breeds, there are hundreds and hundreds of hound packs throughout France used strictly for hunting. Members of these packs are bred and selected for their abilities without great concern for appearance or type. With so many of the old classic "breeds" disappearing and the existence of all these other crossbred hounds, a committee of French cynologists conducted a survey in 1957 and inventoried all the extant packs.
