The classic studies about the canine races scattered by the river basin of the Mediterranean have reached the conclusion that the Cirneco of the Etna would be the descendant of the old dogs of hunting that were bred in the valley of the Nile during the time of the Pharaohs. It is presumed that these dogs arrived at Sicily with the Phoenicians.
Nevertheless, more recent investigations incline in favor of a new conception according to which this one would be a native race of originating Sicilian origin indeed of the places of the Etna. Currencies and engravings exist that testify indeed, that the Cirneco already was in these places many centuries before the birth of Christ.
This dog of light constitution and with a body whose length is equal to the raised one to the cross, that can register therefore within imaginary squaring, is equipped with great vivacity, of an optimal sense of smell and great resistance. Particularly interesting it is his expression, with eyes small and sunk and the aspect of the ears: raised, triangular, relatively long, taken well rigid and with the opening of the returned pavilion forwards.
