Canadian Pointer

Canadian Pointer

The Canadian Pointer is a more developed gundog that was part of the late 19th century. This breed was used mainly for hunting. They were taken along while hunting game upland that was both more demanding and strenuous.

Canadian Pointers are muscular dogs with a medium sized body. The sizes of their gaits are narrower as compared to their English cousins-English Pointer. The Canadian Pointer essentially being a gundog is surprisingly not as agile as other ones of its kinds. These dogs have a rather narrow stance that is formed by the hind quarter and front quarter. The Pointer has ears that are relatively short when compared with the Portuguese and English Pointers. These dogs have a nice full and lush coat. Their characteristic feature is the tail that is anywhere between 10 and twelve inches long. The tail is not really straight but has a rather pronounced curl that extends for almost three fourth the length of the tail. The Canadian Pointers coat is about one and a half inches long, making it a very coarse and short coat. This coat is traditionally thicker than the English Pointers coat and makes it the Canadian Pointer’s most distinguishing feature. These dogs were bred mainly for hunting in bitterly cold weather and hence they have a coarse coat that is able to withstand the cold wind of the mountains. The Canadian Pointer has no solid colored coat and is seen in mainly three colors dark brown and white, light brown and white and the standard black and white. The coat’s precise opaque color will appear in spots all over the dog’s body and specifically the legs. But when spotting occurs on the nose and face it is frowned upon by breeders and judges of dog shows.

The average male Canadian Pointer is more or less than 30 inches tall and weighs in at 48 to 60 pounds. The female Pointer is 22 to 28 inches tall and weighs 44-54 pounds. Canadian Pointers are among the most healthy breed of dogs. They do however suffer from some health problems such as cherry eye, allergies, hip dysplasia and epilepsy occasionally. This floppy eared breed of dog like others of its kind can have some ear infections. The overall health of the dog remains healthy for most with only a few exceptions that suffer from the above mentioned ailments. Canadian Pointers have a 12 to 15 year span of life which is about an average span where dogs are concerned.

This type of dog is even and calm tempered making them very friendly and pleasurable pets at home. These dogs were originally were outdoor animals but are more than content just lazing around the house occupying the sofa. The Canadian Pointer loves being part of a family and is very good with small children. They have a good sense of smell and excellent powers of observation. These intelligent dogs are noted for their ability of getting out of a rather tricky situation.
