In the hunting Literature one verifies that hunting dogs similar to the “Deutscher Wachtelhund” existed centuries ago, which were used to rise to the wild animal. Also the term “Wachtelhund” is an historical data.

The young according to the genealogical book of the “Deutscher Wachtelhund” took place at the beginning of the century. The ancestor of the race was “August Lord 1834 Ls” coming from Staufenberg (High Bavaria). The raising of the pure race began with some suitable females. At the beginning only brown dogs (some with white marks) and white dogs with brown arose; in the form of particularitity these last ones showed to small red marks in the head and extremities, the call color “fire”. Through the female “Baby auf to der Schanze 1838L” introduced the brown color ruano in the race.

Rudolf Friess (R.F.) decisively influenced during decades in the raising of the “Deutscher Wachtelhund” and introdució the separated raising of the dogs of brown color and brown color ruano. In this way it created the fundamental condition that, in spite of the close starting point of the raising, consanguineous defects could be avoided by means of you cross programmed within both varieties. The separation of the varieties of color also seemed useful by the little different predisposition from the dogs: the browns like hunters short-distance easier to mainly handle and the ruanos browns like remote and tracking hunters.

The different predisposition no longer is valid at present like a reliable characteristic to differentiate both varieties, because for diverse reasons they have been carried out to repeated times you cross between the two varieties. Nevertheless, generally the separation serves still at present to each other to maintain a reserve of blood nonbecome related within the race.

The German Pointer was and exclusively continues being bred by hunters for hunters like dog of hunting of multipurpose utility.
