EPAGNEULS PICARDIES

The time-honored spaniels of Picardy are closely related to the French Spaniel and others of his genre. At one time the Picard was under the threat of disappearing, but has recently gained a renewed interest among the hunters of France. He is a dog of natural abilities that can find and retrieve game under the most demanding and difficult conditions. If he has a specialty, it is probably marsh work for ducks, but owners say he is equally good for fur and feather in field or woods.

A dog of courage, the Picardy has an even temperament and is always in good spirits, making him a docile, amiable companion. French owners say he "loves to live in the house." He is devoted to his master and looks to his owner for direction. In appearance, he is a square-bodied setter> with the typically long tail and medium head without exaggeration. His colors, with the heavy ticking, are distinctive. With his chocolate/tan/white coat, the ticking throughout gives the Picard a two-tone brown roan jacket.
The soft-natured Blue was created by crossing Picards with British setters, probably blue bel-ton English Setters in the late 1800s. Tan points called "fire marks" are not allowed; his black ticking creates the "blue" pattern. Modern owners say when the Blue accompanies a hunter, "he goes to work." His specialty is hunting the snipe in marshes. Considered a separate breed, the Blue Picardy is judged by nearly the same standard except for color.
