The English Coonhound was first bred in the United States. These dogs were also known as the Redtick Coonhound. These dogs are a kind of Coonhound that is usually bred in the Southern parts of the United States. The coat of this American dog is hard and short. They are usually seen in colours of white ticked with blue; white ticked and red, and a tri colour with ticking, black and white and red and white, although too much black or red on their coat is considered as a fault for show dogs. These dogs have a hound bawl bark. Their bark is quite powerful and loud. They have high set medium length tails. They are confident, pleasant and alert dogs. They are very friendly with humans.

English Coonhounds are active, energetic and intelligent. These dogs are forever willing to please their owners and are very affectionate towards them. These dogs have very heightened sense making them wonderful hunting dogs. This breed of dog has an amazing speed, competitive nature and hot trailing ability. The Coonhound is a family dog devoted to being a good companion. They are good dogs to be kept indoors and make excellent watch dogs for their families. The English Coonhound is better when with considerate and older children but can also bond with some young children. This dog needs consistent, firm and confident handling. If not given proper care, these dogs can become aggressive and destructive.

The English Coonhound heeds to be socialized early on to ensure a friendly demeanor with all. They will do well with other dogs as pets but may not be very good with any other animals due to their hunting instincts. These dogs need plenty of regular exercise preferably on the leash. If the English Coonhound is let off the leash this, dog can go chasing after cats or even a new scent. These dogs have a tendency of becoming high strung if they are not properly mentally and physically exercised. Tree animals are this breed of dog’s favorite bait. These dogs need proper human leadership as they have tendencies of becoming aggressive towards dogs or developing other Behavioral problems.

The English Coonhound stands at about 53 to 69 cms tall and is anywhere between18 to 30 kgs heavy. This breed has a life expectancy of about 12 to 14 years. The hound is a very active dog both in and outdoors. They require lots of space to run around and flex their muscles. They thus not well suited for life in an apartment. They will do best with a large yard and lots of exercise. They love to run and need and extensive amount of running opportunity to stay happy. This breed of dog will love you for taking them on brisk long walks everyday and giving them enough plat time. Fetch is their favorite game as is requires running and following something, this appeals to heir hunting instincts. This dog needs a firm brushing and bathing when needed.
