English Shepherd

The English Shepherd is primarily a working dog. This breed of dog is very versatile and was first seen in the United States of America. These dogs are all rounder’s. They are practical and very intelligent animals. This dog can be used as a farm dog, great companions for children, hunting dogs, work dogs and even herding dogs. These dogs were used to exterminate vermin that was greatly present in that age and time. They were common work dogs in the 1800’s and became fashionable town in the 1900’s. These dogs were bred mainly as work dogs and not really as show dogs. These dogs were not specialized for working only with livestock, their versatility showed through in the various jobs they able to perform with ease and precision.
The English Shepherd dogs share a close appearance with Australian Shepherd dogs and Border Collies. The English Shepherd has a rounded tail, more so than the Australian dogs. These dogs do not have a square body like most other Shepherd dogs but a more well rounded and developed, with a muscular body. These dogs have a unique herding style. They have a more lax and calm approach in herding as opposed to the Border collie. These dogs are not very large and are more moderate in size. They are almost longer than they are tall. They usually weight around 20 to 30 kgs. This dog has a well proportioned and balanced body.
The English Shepherd has a medium length coat with hair that is curly, wavy or even straight. There is almost always some feathering noticed on the tail and legs of the dog. Since these dogs are primarily working dogs the coat should be kept at an easy to maintain length that requires very little grooming. This coat has a unique quality that allows does to just fall from it rather than stick on it. They are usually seen in colours of white and sable, black and white, tricolour or even tan and black. This dog can also be seen in solid colours as well as tricolours with red noses, brindles and sable. These colours are rarely ever noticed in the English Shepherd dog.
The temperament of the English Shepherd dog is its defining characteristic. They show a unique type of kindness to people and animals and their family. These dogs are also very intelligent animals. These dogs prefer to work alone and independently. They are quick to learn and highly adaptable dogs. This dog will be wary of strangers but once they know a person as their won there will be no better caretaker than this Shepherd dog. They are rather bossy dogs and thus require a firm and confident handler. They will make excellent companions to humans. This breed of dog is very healthy and suffers from very few diseases. They do sometimes suffer from hip dysplasia. These dogs require a lot of exercise and will not do well living in an apartment or enclosed area.
