English Springer Spaniel

The English Springer Spaniel is a gun dog breed that was originally bred as a hunting dog. They were used to hunt and flush out a lot of game. Hunters loved the company of these lively and loyal dogs. This dog is from the spaniel family of dogs. These dogs can have very versatile personalities depending on what they are bred for. The show dogs are very different in temperament and behavior than the work dogs. The work dog will not be adaptable to the show ring and the show dogs will not do well on the field performing menial tasks. The show dogs do not have as much stamina or even incline to be a work dog. The field dogs have coarse short hair as opposed to the longer and softer hair of the show dogs. These two varieties of the same dog sometimes appear to be a completely different breed from each other.
The field bred dogs ears are much less pendulous than the show dogs that have pendant shaped ears that are fluffy and distinct. The field dogs have a more feral and wiry look to them than the sophisticated appearance of the show dogs. The field dogs have a longer tail than the show dogs. The show dog’s tail is usually docked to look like a little stub at the end of the dog. The field bred dogs are usually judged on the hunting ability, training response and their nose. The appearance is not given that much importance the skill it displays is what makes or breaks a field dog winner. The show dogs are heavier and more thickly bones than the field dogs. Their ears are their distinguishing quality, which have dangling flews and dewlaps.
These dogs a fair amount of hair in the summer and spring seasons there can be some amount of shedding in autumn as well. The coat is usually seen in a dark brown or black color. All coats have certain white marks present. Some coats can be mainly whit with either liver or black marks present. The dogs are also seen in a tri color of liver black and tan or even blue and white with tan or liver marks present on the inside of the ears, cheeks, under the tail and eyebrows. The white portion of any dog of this breed can be flecked with ticking. These dogs usually stand at about 51 cm for the male that also weighs 23 to 25 kg. The females stand at 43 to 48 cm tall and weigh 16 to 20 kg.
These dogs are quick learners, eager to please, obedient and friendly spaniels. They are easy going and affectionate family dogs. They are active and intelligent dogs. They are moderately energetic but have excellent stamina. They need a decent amount of mental and physical stimulation. These dogs are good with other family pets and will get along well with everyone in the family. They are playful and happy animals to have around.
