Field Spaniel

Field Spaniel

The Field Spaniel is a breed of gundog. They come from a family of several other Spaniel dogs. The Field Spaniel is a dog of medium size and proportions. These dogs were first seen in England. This dog was bred originally to be a show dog. The people of that time were very fond of being able to breed and keep show dogs and hence the Field Spaniel was born. This dog has slowly become a rare breed and is mainly seen as a hunting champion in the show rings. The Field Spaniel stands at about 43 to 48 cm and is 18 to 25 kg heavy.

The Field Spaniel has a lovely silky hair coat that is noticeable from far. Their coat consists of long strands of hair that is very soft to touch. The coat is usually seen in solid colors of black and liver. Some dogs are seen with some tan points which are a blend of white and black hair. This color is not preferred by experts in the show ring. These dogs are longer than they are tall. The long body has an abundance of touchable silky hair that makes these dogs very approachable. The European breeders prefer a small dog where as the American breeders like them of a slightly larger build.

The Field Spaniel is a very adaptable breed of dog. They are very social animals and will mingle with everyone around them. They are even friendly with cats and can live peacefully with other house pets. They do however need to be supervised around smaller animals like mice and rabbits as these dogs do have hunting instincts, although if these animals are socialized with birds and other such animals as a puppy, they will get along well with them. The Field Spaniel is a very family oriented dog. They are very happy being around members of their family. They will show a lot of affection to everyone in the family and will expect a lot of attention as well. They are however wary of strangers and will give a warning bark to anyone who tries to enter the house. This makes them very good watch dogs as well. They are however not equipped to handle harsh situations, they are thus not guard dogs just watch dogs.

The Field Spaniel like any other Spaniel does require some amount of grooming. The coat of this dog is their pride and joy, and needs to be well maintained. A neat and tidy outlook needs to be maintained to prevent skin allergies and ear infections. Their hair needs to be trimmed on a regular basis. The ears need to be given extra importance. Their nails need to be kept short and not allowed to grow long. These dogs are fairly active but will adjust well to life in an apartment. They do however require lots of play time. A daily walk will take care of their exercise needs. They make wonderful pets to have around the house.
