Finnish Hound

Finnish Hound

The Finnish Hounds have a dense and short coat. They come in various colors such as black saddle with tan markings on them. They also have some markings of the color white on their heads, tail tip, feet and chest. The Finnish Hounds are a very friendly breed and they never show signs of being aggressive to anyone or anything. They remain calm and energetic all day long, making them great for hunting. They are used to hunt foxes and hare. Being Hound dogs, they have a very sharp sense of smell, so they are good in hunting just by the scent of the prey.

The Finnish Hounds like to hunt by themselves and not in packs. They hunt individually and still get the work done as they are a very determined breed. These dogs manage to hunt no matter what the circumstances are. They end up tracking the prey with great versatility. They also bark consecutively when tracking the pray. They need a master who gives clear cut instructions, and these dogs will be more than happy to obey them. These dogs from a hunting background, that is the reason these dogs will not adjust well for apartment living.

The Finnish Hounds weigh in at around 20 to 25 kg (45 to 55 pounds) for a healthy dog. They stand tall at around 52 to 61 cm (20 to 24 inches) for a full grown adult. The female counter parts of the Finnish Hounds end up being of a little smaller size as compared to the males, and they weigh in a little lighter too. These dogs do make for good pets. They manage to remain happy in doors as long they have at least a small back yard to run around and play in.

These dogs have extreme amounts of stamina in them because of their hunting pedigree. This is the reason they will need daily amounts of exercise. They like having play time with kids. If that is not a possibility, they will need at least a long walk. These dogs always prefer to be behind their maters and let them lead the way while going for these long walks. They are the most happiest if they get to run around on their own. This is a possibility in country sides where there is adequate amount of fenced spaces, but it is not advisable to let the dog off leash in a park.

A healthy and a fit Finnish Hound is expected to live for around 12 years. They have a smooth coat on them. This coat is full of short hairs that are easy to maintain. All they need is some brushing and an occasional shampoo bath. But do not use shampoos that are very strong, only use the ones that are mild. They happen to be recognized by the DRA, ACR, APRI, FCI and the FKC. These dogs are very popular in Sweden and Finland, but not so much around the rest of the world.
