GREEK HAREHOUND

The native hound of Greece is very similar to the Yugoslavian Balkan Hound. Southern Yugoslavia borders on the north of Greece and forms the western edge of the Balkan Peninsula. The two breeds probably had similar origins or are actually two strains that have developed from the same ancient breed.
Although renowned locally for his skilled nose and resonant voice, the Greek dog is known only in his native land. Formal dog breeding and exhibiting is limited in Greece, but this type of hound has remained pure because of his abilities. Used especially over the rocky terrain so prevalent in his homeland, he is hunted singly, in pairs or in small packs.
