German Spaniel

German Spaniel

In Germany, where the German Spaniel was originally bred, it is called the Deutscher Wachtelhund. It is also known as Deutscher Wachtel and German Quail Dog. It was bred as a gun dog, to be used in hunting both small and large game.

The built of the German Spaniel is very well suited for its purpose. This breed of dogs has strong bone as well as musculature and is not prone to injuries. The dog itself is medium in size and has a coat of thick and long wavy fur. But despite its size, it is a strong enough dog to even retrieve prey as heavy as a dead hare or fox.

The German Spaniel has very long ears. They can reach up to anywhere between the middle of the nose to the tip of the nose. In most cases, the height of the German Spaniel is between 18 and 22 inches. However, its length, which is calculated from the tip of the nose to the base of the tail is almost double its height. This breed of dogs is certainly longer than it is tall. Given its size, this breed of dogs is just slightly bigger than the Springer Spaniel in size.

The coat of the German Spaniel is well developed to provide the dog with enough insulation and protection against the elements of nature. Its fur is thick, long as well as wavy all across its body except on it head. On its head, the fur is fine and short-haired. The undercoat keeps the dog warm when the weather is chilly and dry when it is raining. This goes a long way in maintaining the health of the dog. The fur also ends in long feather-like strands, giving the dog an exquisite look.

As a gundog, the German Spaniel is exceptional in its abilities. Most importantly, unlike many other breeds of dogs, these dogs are fully capable of hunting game which is upland. Being a strong dog, the task is well within its abilities. Moreover, they are also exceptional in their retrieving abilities. It is commonly said that the retrieving abilities of a German Spaniel are as good, if not better, than any other breed of dogs, including Retrievers, who are specifically bred for that explicit purpose. On the other hand, they are also brilliant at tracking. They can pick on a scent or a blood trail from a large distance and track it successfully to the prey. They can do so even when the game is much larger than their own size.

It is not only prey on land that the German Spaniel is good at hunting. It is also an exceptional all round gun dog for hunting birds like quail. As a rule, German Spaniels are great gundogs to have, no matter what kind of game you are keen on hunting.

The German Spaniel is an intelligent, friendly and loving dog. They are easily trained and make good pets. They love hunting and playing water games.
