German Longhaired Pointer

German Longhaired Pointer

The German Longhaired Pointer comes from Germany and is a gundog. The German Longhaired Pointer is very athletic in nature and very muscular, yet elegant to look at. Its body is such that despite the muscles, it is not bulky and cumbersome as it needs to be able to move freely and speedily to perform its function effectively. Its bone mass is also not very heavy for the same reason. The German Longhaired Pointers shares the characteristic of webbed feet with other German Pointers.

German Longhaired Pointers are usually 30 kg or 66 lbs in weight. Males grow up to 28 inches or 70 cm at the withers and females are known to grow up to 26 inches or 66 cm. German Longhaired Pointers have a medium length coat which is about one or two inches or three to five centimeters, although its featherings may be a bit longer. The coat is usually wavy, but stops short of being curly. However, the coat is firm, not soft and shiny, not silky. The German Longhaired Pointer always has a double coat. The undercoat is quite thick, but not too dense, for instance, it is not dense enough to make guard hair stand at straight angles from the body.

The color of the coat of the German Longhaired Pointer is almost always chocolate brown. In many cases, it is possible to get white fur on some parts of the body like the paws, muzzle area and chest. The other color that you may find in German Longhaired Pointer is dark brown roan. In these cases, you may also find dark brown fur on their heads, tails and back.

The German Longhaired Pointer is a wonderful dog as a pet. It is intelligent and learns to obey commands easily. It is also very kind and compassionate and is great around children. The German Longhaired Pointer tends to get very attached to its owners and even suffers from anxiety when separated from them. However, they are only manageable as pets as long as they are given a lot of physical exercise and are kept occupied with something to do at all time.

German Longhaired Pointers are not very well suited to a sedentary lifestyle. That is why they are not well suited in urban settings where it is difficult to give them enough room for thorough physical exercise. They are used to have a lot of open spaces where they can run and play. They are highly energetic dogs and need to expend their energy daily. They are best suited in rural regions that have open spaces as well as streams and ponds where they can swim. Ideally, they should be owned by an active hunter who can exercise the dogs daily and train it well to accompany him during hunts. The German Longhaired Pointer is a very useful pointing dog and is happiest when it is performing this function. They also perform very well in dog sports as long as they are trained properly.
