Gull Terr
![]() |
A local breed of Pakistan, the Gull Terr is very similar to the Gull Dong in nature and appearance. Found extensively in Pakistan and the northern areas of India, this breed is known for its bear fighting skills. Used primarily as a working dog in the earlier days, today its used for mainly security and defense purposes. Because of their aggressive and wild nature, many of these dogs are mostly kept on a tight leash in urban situations. Therefore it is advisable to say that the Gull Terr is mostly fit for an outdoor life with continuous challenges. It is one of the most active and agile, medium built dogs that have a short but smooth coat. This therefore allows it to skip a daily schedule of grooming and care that most of the dogs require. All the features of this dog support its natural tendencies to be born free and let be.
Most of them cannot be handled in a family life, if brought up in the right ambience and taught and trained to live in a city life, they can their attitude can be altered. With adequate training and discipline, these dogs can be used as ideal guard dogs. Ideally they would fit into a farm or forest life that provides them with daily challenges and some excitement. Respectful and loyal to their owners, these dogs would fight to death if their owners are faced with danger or even a slight threat. Known for its basic instincts and intuition, the Terr can be an excellent companion of a hunter. Very alert and agile in nature, this breed can be a very useful guide and companion in the outdoors.
With the advent of the British rule, many things around were altered. The British brought with them the genuine British bull terrier that later resulted in forming the Bull Terr which was a localized breed of dog. Known for participating in many illegal forms of animal fighting, this dog was extensively used in bear fighting, which is an illegal sport in almost all countries today. The Terr is widely popular for its fast speed and accuracy. Not very common in other parts of the world, these dogs are agile, quick and always on their feet. Known for its bear hunting skills, one dog can easily challenge a medium sized bear. Being quite brutal in its bloodline, the Gull Dong is a breed that awaits challenges and requires a lot of exercise and hard work.
Due to the reason that its nature and temperament are very difficult to mould, these dogs continue to serve as hunting dogs and assist hunters etc. due to the fact that the Terr can be quite a hand full, it is very difficult for the lay man to train it without much experience. It requires time and patience to handle an outdoor and rather wild dog like the Dong. But once trained, this intelligent and sophisticated breed can be taught to perform tricks and is excellent in tracking objects, animals or even people. Often confused with the bull dong, this breed has similar ancestors but is separate breed of dog.
