The Hamiltonstovare is a hunting breed of dog. This dog is a hound and thus has natural hunting instincts. These dogs were developed by Swedish people, and have ancestry roots lying in the German hounds, English fox hounds as well as harriers. This breed of dog has a trademark white blaze prominently noticeable over their paws, down their necks and their heads. The Hamiltonstovare is similar in appearance to the English foxhound but has a lighter frame. This dog has a general appearance of a somewhat rectangular shaped body that is well proportioned and muscular. These dogs exhibit great amounts of stamina and strength. Their coats are usually seen in a tricolor of black, white and brown.
These hounds are known to be very handsome and make wonderful companions. They have an even tempered nature with a very gentle and friendly approach. They will build strong bonds with their family and are very protective animals. These hounds need a lot of love and affection to remain content and happy. They are people oriented and require some amount of human company at all times. They will not be happy with a lonely existence even if it is outdoors. If left alone for long hours they will have destructive tendencies. This dog due to its hunting instincts requires a fenced garden to run around and play.
This hound has a tendency to chase after small animals and will start barking and digging if left loose. These dogs can get lost easily and hence should always be kept on a leash. The Hamiltonstovare is very good with other dogs and has an active, patient and fun-loving personality. They make great pets for children. This breed is characterized by its friendly nature and lovable approach. These dogs are very hygienic and clean and require little maintenance. These dogs require a lot of companionship and family time. These dogs are quite large and stand anywhere between 46 and 60 cm tall. The females are considerably shorter than the males. An adult Hamiltonstovare should weigh between 23 and 27 kgs.
The Hamiltonstovare was originally bred to hunt and thus requires a lot of exercise. These dogs need to be kept physically and mentally stimulated at all times. They require regular long and brisk walks to keep them happy. They will love a good game of fetch in any kind of weather. This breed of hound will see any small animal as prey and will instantly run after them on a hunting expedition. They should remain under supervision under all times. These dogs require a considerable amount of training but once trained will remain very obedient. Care has to be taken to ensure these dogs are not over exercised as they can develop joint diseases as they grow. These dogs have a double layered coat with a dense, short outer coat with a soft, thick undercoat. Their coats are usually weatherproof. This breed has a lifespan of anywhere between 12-13 years. They make good house pets.
