Hanover Hound

The Hanover hound is sometimes also known as the Hanoverian Hound. This breed of dog is of the hound type. These dogs are descendants of the medial bloodhound. These dogs are thus very good trackers. This dog was first seen in the 1980’s in France. The Hanover Hound is still a fairly rare breed of dog. The Hanover hound was cross bred with the Bavarian hound giving rise to the Bavarian Mountain hound. This breed of dog has its origins in Germany.

The Hanover Hound is a type of scent hound and has a muscular and well proportioned body. These dogs are powerful and medium and size. These dogs are known for the large heads with the trademark wrinkled forehead. These dogs are known to be very handsome with a strong and tapering muzzle. They have large and broad noses with nicely opened nostrils. Their noses are usually seen in a pure black shade. They have very strong jaws with teeth ending in a scissor or pincer bite. The Hanover hound has somewhat slanted eyes that are dark brown in color with a rather serious expression. They have slightly rounded blunt ears that are high on the head but flop downwards to the face.

The Hanover hound is very rarely kept as just a house pet. These dogs are well renowned for their tracking abilities, especially wounded animals. They are thus more often than not used by game wardens or foresters to find and help the injured animals. The strong work ethics of this dog make it a wonderful work companion. These dogs are very sensitive to what their handler requires, this particular quality makes them the most wanted breed for a work scenario. These dogs are very devoted, affectionate and loyal. But they will only display these traits to their owner or people they care about. They will be aggressive with strangers or will just remain aloof. These dogs require an extensive exercise routine. They will not be happy in an apartment and will require a large yard and regular hiking or outdoor adventure trips. This dog is the perfect choice for an active adventurous family.

These dogs have a calm temperament and will get along with children if they are socialized enough as puppies. These dogs will require training but will remain obedient once properly trained. They need supervision around non canine pets as they have natural hunting instincts.

These dogs can live up to 14 years. Since this dog originally bred to work their appearance doesn’t matter that much. They are self sufficient and do not require much grooming. A wet cloth rubbed on the coat will make it shiny and regular brushing will maintain its quality. Their ears need to be checked regularly and their nails to be kept short.
