The Harrier dog is a type of hound. This breed like other Hounds is a hunting dog. These dogs were bred originally to hunt hare. These dogs have a very powerful nose capable of following scents along a tricky trail. They use their tracking abilities to hunt Hare. The Harrier is a medium sized hound. These dogs are not as small as Beagle’s in their size but are not quite as big as the English foxhound. The Harrier shares some physical likeness to the English foxhound. The Harrier dog was first seen in United Kingdom. These dogs are still quite rare in the United States but are widely seen In Ireland as working and hunting dogs.

The Harrier is one of the only living breeds of dog that actually stays true to is medium size. This dog is a smaller version of the English foxhound. It is said that the Harrier is an indirect Descendent of the English foxhound. This breed of dog as an adult dog, stands anywhere between 19 to 21 inches at their shoulders and weigh about 45 to 60 pounds. These dogs are seen in an array of colors and various combinations. The coat is made up of quite coarse hair that is grows to a fairly short length. They have hanging and floppy ears that prick up slightly when they are alert or aroused.

The Harrier is known as the “Beagle on steroids”. This nickname comes from the physical appearance of the dog. These dogs have a well defined muscular body with powerful limbs. The body has a slight yet visible arc. The bones of the Harrier dog are large and dense giving them good strength and a lot of stamina. These dogs have a hard coat that is well suited for their hunting expedition. They need very little grooming as these hounds are quite self sufficient. These dogs are almost longer than they are tall. They have a nice leveled top line, giving the dog a sophisticated look. The tail is usually curved, carried fairly high and is of medium length. They have a square strong muzzle with a broad skull. They have pendant shaped rounded ears. Their eyes are hazel or brown in color.

The Harrier dog is a very alert and lively dog. They have a constant aware expression but can be very relaxed and mellow around their family. They have powerful black noses that are used during hunting. These dogs are brilliant with children. They are very tolerant, cheerful and sweet tempered dogs. They are fairly good with other dogs but will need some amount of supervision around non canine pets. They prefer being a relatively large family and don’t always like solitude. This dog can live up to 10-12 years. These dogs loving running around and will go tearing after an interesting scent. They enjoy exploring their surroundings. They will thus need to be kept in an enclosed area or on a leash. The Harrier needs lots of exercise.
