The Havanese dog is a Bichon type of dog that is a complete non shedder. This bred of dog was developed from an extinct breed known as the Bichon Tenerife. The Havanese was brought to by the Spanish people to the Canary Islands and then spread to other regions in Spain by the sailors of the time. This breed is known for their playful and dun loving nature. These dogs are very good with children, but considerate and older children. These dogs are rather small in size and were originally bred to be companions. These dogs are somewhat lazy and will enjoy lazing on the furniture in the house.

The Havanese dog is a breed of toy dog. These dogs however are quite sturdy and hardy for their size. The appearance of this dog does not point to an outwardly delicate or fragile body. They range in size from 216 to 292mm and weigh anywhere between 10 and 12 kg. The appropriate height for the Havanese is between 229 and 267mm. These dogs are somewhat longer than they are tall. The Havanese has one unique physical feature in their top line which has a slight rise from the rump to the withers. They have a nice flashy gait but it is not too far reaching. These dogs are beautiful even as puppies. They love to play and have a sprightly and lively nature. They exhibit great agility in their movements. Although these dogs are not very fond of water, they do make fair swimmers.

The Havanese has almond shaped eyes with an alert, aware and intelligent expression. There is always some hair that falls over the dogs eyes. They have very sweet looking faces and are adorable pets. They have well feathered floppy ears that never stand up. The tail is always covered with an abundance of fur and is slightly curved upwards while it is held in rest. This dog needs a regular brushing to avoid matting of the fur. Though these dogs have a lot of fur but it is not a protective layer in cold weather. These dogs will require sweaters to keep them warm. This breed doesn’t require much grooming other than a blow dry after a shampoo. The experts prefer the dog to remain natural in their appearance.

The Havanese dog has a light, long, soft and silky coat. These digs do have a double layered but unlike other breeds with a two layered coat; the Havanese has a soft ad long outer coat. The coat can be seen in a solid color o all white or in a mix of several colors. All colors are acceptable for show dogs. These dogs are very outgoing and friendly. They will bond well with everyone at home and are well behaved dogs. These dogs are attention seekers as they will perform silly tricks to get their owners attention. They are very oriented to people and love their family. This breed of dog will live for about 14 to 16 years.
