Hawaiian Poi Dog

Hawaiian Poi Dog

The Hawaiian Poi dog is also known as lilo and was first seen in the United States. This breed of dog is of the paraiah type and is now an extinct breed. The Hawaiian Poi dog was used by native Hawaiian tribes as a spiritual protector for their children and various sources of food. The Hawaiian poi dog is a mix of several other breed of dogs. As its name suggests the Hawaiian poi dog originated in Hawaii. These dogs were never really bred for the show ring. And only human or natural selection was used as terms for breeding. This dog was used as somewhat of a lucky charm. They were not really suited for any work and thus the breed slowly reached extinction.

The Hawaiian Poi dog has a short coat that was seen in a variety of colors and shades. The coat was double layered with a coarse dense outer layer and a smooth and fine haired undercoat. The body of the Hawaiian Poi dog was almost a barrel in shape with a small head. Their bodies were rather low with short legs. This dog had a characteristic round and dominant belly that gave the Hawaiian Poi dog the appearance of being overweight. Their heads were usually flat and larger than their bodies with short triangular ears. Their ears were not floppy and stood erect on the sides of their head. The shape and size of their head was a result of a vegetarian diet that did not provide enough chewing elements. The Hawaiian Poi dog was very playful and friendly but was not as elegant as some other toy breeds. The Hawaiian Poi dog was in fact rather clumsy in its movements. The Hawaiian Poi dog was not very vocal and rarely barked. These dogs were known to be lazy and fat. The Hawaiian Poi dog was usually fattened up and then eaten by the native Hawaiian tribes. These dogs were fed a paste of fermented baked and ground taro root that gave them their appearance. These dogs were not among the most intelligent breed and had a very sluggish attitude. These dogs did however enjoy playing with children but never ran fast enough to keep up with them. This breed was often compared to hogs as they acted more like pigs than dogs.

The Hawaiian Poi dog stood at around 36cm tall and was almost always overweight with bellies reaching the floor. This was however considered a good thing as the tribes used to feed on them. These dogs were not used to a lot of exercise and usually just waddled around a lot like pigs. Guessing the life expectancy of this breed was hard as they were almost always feasted upon before they died a natural death. This dog usually lived outdoors with the native tribes and could be seen sleeping with children. Even though these dogs had the ability to bond well with their family they were considered more of a delicacy at feasts.
