This dog took the name from the region of Kerry, in the South end of the Irish Republic. Their origins must look for in a type as an older person to terrier that during very many time the Irish farmers used as guardian of their flocks and for the harmful animal hunting that caused a great loss of life between the young lambs.
In the blood of this old dog the one of another terrier is introduced, until, in second half of the last century, the selection of the Kerry Blue began on the base of serious criteria of young, mainly to maintain the natural qualities of hunter and guardian invariable. The official recognition of the race on the part of the Kennel Club, was realised immediately after World War I and more ahead it made his appearance in the French canine exhibitions, achieving a fast success.
