The hound bearing this name was created in 1873 by Rogatien Levesque. Levesque
used Bleu Gascony, Virelade
(Grand Gascon-Sain-tongeois) and English Foxhound to create a breed somewhat
similar to the Grand Gascon in size, color and conformation. Originally
bred to hunt in packs, the Levesque has a fine nose and is fast and sturdy.
He is used for all types of game. The Levesque is a lighter built dog than
some of the other large French hounds, even though still good sized. Today
the Levesque is quite rare, having been crossed with other breeds, or may
even be extinct. Many French cynologists feel that the remaining specimens
were incorporated into the creation of the Chien Francais Blanc et Noir
in 1957. |
