The Large Munsterlander is a breed of gun dog that gets its name from the region of its origin which is the Munster region of Germany. It is basically a hunting dog which was used as a pointer as well as a retriever. The Large Munsterlander is very athletic and energetic. One of the most distinguishable features of the dog is its majestic appearance and poise.
The Large Munsterlander is a very intelligent and noble dog. It has a presence of its own. It is a very muscular built. It has a very athletic appearance and has a gait which is very fluid, smooth and elastic. The dog is of the smaller type though it has the name of large attached to it. This is because there is another variation which is much smaller than this. It grows to a height of 60 to 65 cms for a male and about 58 to 63 cms for a female. The weight of this breed is around an average of 30 kilograms.
The Large Munsterlander has a very recognisable coat. It is typically black and white with medium length of hair. There are many variations of the same coat. Sometimes they can be all black and sometimes all black. The breed shows some markings too on its coat. The dog has patches of solid white in many places especially the chest and the hind quarters. Since it is a hunting breed the coat is firm and sleek making them very easy to maintain.
The Large Munsterlander is a very good hunting dog. It was an ideal companion for the amateur or the rough shooter. The dog has a keen sense of smell and is very patient. It has the ability to be completely at home on water or on land. This means that they are excellent swimmers. The dog can be taught tricks very easily and is a very keen and discerning worker.
The dog is a very loyal and trustworthy breed. They are very affectionate and form very solid bonds with its owner. The Large Munsterlander has a very proportionate body. All the parts are in perfect unison with each other. Hence it is very pleasing to the eye to see a Large Munsterlander standing upright. The breed has a very strong jaw used for retrieving and hunting. It has wide nostrils for good respiratory capacity when they are running on difficult terrain. They have a set of intelligent eyes which are dark brown. The ears are high set and they are lying on the head with rounded tips. They have long hair on the ears which extend well after the tip.
The mouth of the breed houses a set of fine teeth which are strong and solid due to their hunting heritage. The breed has a very strong body which is highest at the withers and gently sloping down towards the rear end. The breed is very comfortable with children and elders and forms a very good house pet.
