The Portuguese pointer is breed that is basically a gun dog. Gun dogs are hunting dogs. The Portuguese pointer is a very accomplished pointer. The pointer is used to locate game. The pointer dogs will go ahead and search for game. When they are doing this they are very silent and stealthy. When the shooter approaches they will stop in their tracks and point their noses to the direction of the game so that they can shoot. These dogs were used on hunting expeditions on the Portuguese main lands.
They are a very serious looking breed. They are bigger and taller than usual pointers. Hence they are good at going into tall grass and vegetation and due to their height they are able to be spotted from a distance. They have a size of about 50 to 60 cms. They weigh around 27 kilograms on an average which is on the higher side. The coat of the Portuguese pointer is smooth. It has very less hair and so maintaining them is easier. They have a standard colouration of brown or yellow. Spots are very rare. The texture of the coat is velvety on the ear and the face.
The Portuguese pointer is a very good show dog too. This is because of the very easy and cool temperament. They are easily trainable and are willing to learn. The breed is a strong swimmer too. This makes a very active breed. They need their share of regular exercise. If they are not active they suffer from muscular dystrophy. This is a serious problem.
The Portuguese pointer dog is a very good breed as a pet. They have a very straight and sharp look. One of the most distinctive feature or physical attribute is the fold of skin that hangs on either side of their mouth. This is a fold of skin which flaps around when they shake their head. This makes them look very serious and aggressive. In reality they are very playful and energetic. They are at home on the open field as well as inside the house.
The Portuguese pointer dog was used for hunting partridges. They will flock the birds in one area and show the shooter the location. After the hunt they will also help the shooter to retrieve the game. This makes them very good hunting dogs. They have very strong legs which helps them to cover large distances in a short time. They need this agility to chase the partridges.
The Portuguese pointer dog is a famous dog and has adapted well all over the world as a pet and a good companion. The breed has strong hunting skills which will show when they are playing. They will chase birds and small animals and sometimes try to hunt them too. This can be changed with proper training. The breed is comfortable with children as well as elders as they do not run around the house. They are reserved but when they need to play they will do their routine with a lot of energy.
