WELSH SPRINGER SPANIEL

Wales's distinctive red/white spaniel has been portrayed by artists even earlier than the other British spaniels. The Celts originally settled Wales, Ireland and Brittany, and some relationship to the red/white hunting dogs of those areas could easily be established. He was also part of that happy mixture of British spaniels prior to the 20th century. Consequently, a long and pure history is not pretended. His standardization coincided with the time period of the Cocker and
the Springer. Breeder A.T. Williams, around 1900, promoted the breed both on the bench and at working trials.

The Welsh differs from the English Springer by reason of his more tapered head, the body, which is lower on leg, the smaller and higher set ear, as well as his clear red and white jacket. A true individual, he should not be dismissed as a "dumpy English Springer" or a "big coarse Cocker." He doesn't show any exaggeration of feathering or coat, which may carry a bit of a wave.
A natural flushing spaniel, he is a keen and tireless worker, and is particularly good in water. In Wales, he is also known as a "Starter." The breed has never become numerous in the United States or in any other country. But his happy spaniel temperament has won loyal friends who continue to foster the breed.
