Travelling With Your Dog

A pet dog is an important member of your household, and surveys show that more and more families are taking their pets with them on vacation. Car Sickness - Some dogs, like people, become carsick, especially if a dog does not have many opportunities to ride in the car. Try a few test rides with him to the store, or for a Sunday drive to accustom him to riding. If he becomes upset, a veterinarian may prescribe medication.

Do not leave your dog in a car with all windows closed
Lower the windows about 3/4-inch to allow circulation. Try to park in the shade, and, if possible, where you can watch your car. Check every hour or so to be certain your dog is comfortable. Be sure the car is locked. Ticks, Fleas, Mosquitoes, etc. These pests can be carriers of disease and parasites. If you plan to vacation near lakes and woods, have your veterinarian recommend effective sprays to repel these pests. This is most important precaution. Mosquitoes transmit heartworm ... a killer of dogs and most expensive to treat if a dog becomes infected. Caution—If you own both a dog and a cat, some sprays are suitable for use on dogs only! Please check the label and with your veterinarian before use. Summer Heat—During the warm weather, be careful that you do not lock your dog in a car with all the windows closed; always leave a crack on both sides of the car window for circulation. Never stake or tie a dog in the sun. If a dog is panting profusely and seems to be having trouble getting his breath, get him to a veterinarian at once!

Water—Part of the cooling process of dogs is loss of heat and moisture through panting, so give your pet plenty of clean water. Allow him to drink only the same water you yourself would drink and never from standing puddles or drainage water. Wire Cages—One of the best investments you can make is in a folding crate, which will prove to be invaluable. If you have room in your car, place the pet in it while driving for his protection against injury or loss in case of an accident.

Motels—Most motels welcome guests and their pets, but a dog owner must have certain responsibilities to the motel as well as to the other guests. Whenever you leave the motel, make sure the dog is in his crate; this will safeguard the room from damage done to the draperies, furniture or the carpets. Be considerate when your dog is exercised; be careful not to destroy shrubs and grass, or foul walkways and playgrounds. Be a responsible dog owner and help us always to be welcomed guests at all motels.

A dog should never be left alone in a motel room unless he is crated or secured in a pen. If you do otherwise, be prepared to pay for damage he may do out of boredom or panic. An unpenned dog is a poor idea the reason so many motels forbid pets today. There is always the possibility of a maid or custodian coming to clean the room and letting your dog get loose in a strange area. A crate or cage is almost a "must" when traveling with your dog. It is not only a blessing for you but rapidly becomes a sanctuary to him especially if it contains a few of his familiar treasures.

Lost Dogs-—When traveling with your dog, always keep him on a lead when he is taken out of the car. Remember ... he is in strange territory . . . unfamiliar streets and traffic, with no recognizable landmarks ... so he can easily stray and be unable to finl his way back.
An up-to-date dog tag with current address and phone number should be on your pet. For travel you should purchase a special tag which can be changed daily and kept up to date. Otherwise, if you become separated from your dog, and if you aren't back home to receive the call, your dog may be destroyed. Remember most animal shelters only keep dogs for a few days.
