Lancashire Heeler

Lancashire Heeler

These dogs where nearly extinct during the period of time when people no longer elide on the contributions of the cattle dog. The breeds of dogs that exist today are merely the recreations of the original breed of Lancashire Heelers. These recreations have visible lines of the Welsh corgi and the Manchester terrier. The today’s Lancashire heelers are not totally but almost identical to the original Lancashire heelers. Although the recreated dogs have similar qualities and abilities as the original breed of dogs, they are no longer used for the purpose of cattle herding. The original dogs were used to drive livestock and they used to do this by nipping at their heels.

These dogs are low set on the ground. In comparison to the rest of their body, they have very short legs. They have very large ears that are quite wide set. They are preferred with erect ears; if the ears are drooping then these dogs are not desired by any breeders. They have a head that is in perfect proportion with the rest of their body. They tend to have very bright eyes, and these eyes are set wide apart. They have very short yet sturdy legs with slightly turned out paws. They have a very well muscled hind quarter. Their chests are usually very deep and run long. They have a very firm abdomen. Along with all this, they have a very strong back as well. They have a very high set tail that is carried forward and over their back.

They have a seasonable coat. This coat may either be long or may be even short. During the cold winters, they have plush coat with a very visible mane and during the hot summer seasons, they have a very short and shiny coat. It is also very sleek. They have a very flay skull that is wide between their ears and slightly tapering towards their eyes. This tapering towards their eyes will include the nose as well. They have a very strong pair of jaws. They have medium sized and almond shaped eyes. They have a moderate length neck. They have very muscular back legs and always appear parallel when the dog is appeared from behind. They have a smart and brisk movement. They are double coated. The outer coat is short and thick along with being hard and flat.

These dogs are known to be very friendly as well as alert at the same time. These dogs however are friendly only with those who they are familiar with and tend to get very reserved when it comes to strangers. They have an exceptionally well rabbit catching ability. They are also known to have very broad instinctive abilities and superior strength. These dogs also make very pleasant and good companion dogs. They are said to do very well with a little older and considerate kids. As it is in their nature to heard, they have a tendency to nip at everyone’s heels. It must be properly taught to not do this to people. These dogs are trainable but the trainer may find difficulties in getting these dogs to cooperate.
