LANDSEER
![]() |
In the XIX century, an animal draftsman named Edwin Landseer selected and named this work and defense Canadian breed, a variety of Terranova. In the beginning of the XX century it was nearly extinct when a group of German breeders took it upon themselves to keep it from disappearing, performing different crossings with other dogs, such as the Pyrenean Mountain dog and the Saint Bernard.
PHYSICAL TRAITS of the LANDSEER
It is a strong dog, a little taller than the Terranova, with a height of 78 and 80 cm and with a medium weight of 68 kg. It has long fur, smooth at the touch and shiny, with a white background and large black spots, longer at the tail that falls in the shape of a duster. The wide head and black face with medium sized and triangular ears, hazelnut to dark brown almond shaped eyes.
The Landseer’s limbs are muscular with strong bones and a little longer than the Terranova.
Some canine clubs consider the Landseer as a variant of the Terranova.
TEMPERAMENT AND ADAPTATION of the LANDSEER
It is an affectionate dog, friend of the family it lives with and, especially, children. Brave and devoted to defending its own. Intelligent, lively and cheerful. Untrusting with strangers and, if provoked, a troublemaker. It should be trained as a puppy, which it accepts well and makes its adaptation easier. It is not recommended for living at an apartment, since it needs a fair amount of space to keep it in shape and regular walks are not enough for its hygiene.
EXERCISE AND CARE required for a LANDSEER
It should receive regular fur care, common to any dog with these traits. It should be provided the possibility of exercising frequently to avoid obesity, combined with a balanced diet, distributed in two daily rations, as abundant as its great size demands.
