SALUKI DOGS
|
The Saluki Dogs are is one of the oldest domestic canine breeds in the world. It is probable that, related to the Afghan greyhound, it already existed in the Sumerian period. It arrived in Europe by the hand of the Celts, who used it in hunting, it spread un Greece and later the Romans introduced it in Italy. In1840 it was known in England, where it was called the Persian greyhound and the breed’s purity was officially acknowledged in 1923, setting the first standard. Unfortunately, currently there are few specimens in this breed.
PHYSICAL TRAITS of the SALUKI
It is a robust resistant and elegant dog, 58 to 71 cm in height and 15 to 30 kg in weight, the head is narrow and long with an undefined stop and the nose is black or liver red. The eyes are dark or hazelnut, quite large and the ears are mobile and large. It has straight long hair, silky to the touch; especially in the abundant bristles where it is even softer. There is a variety with shorter fur and without bristles. Every characteristic, greyhound color is admitted.
CARÁCTER Y ADAPTACIÓN
Inside the house, the saluki comes across as a very peaceful dog, but in an open space it races round at impressive speed, which made it an expert gazelle hunter. It is very reserved before strangers and anything it finds foreign. It is educated quite easily; it is loyal, affectionate towards its master and, in general, with people around it.
EXERCISE AND CARE required for a SALUKI
Plenty of outdoor exercise, a well balanced diet and proper fur care, common in every long haired greyhound, are the three golden rules to keep the saluki healthy and beautiful.
The Saluki is a very resistant, strong, active and tireless dog. Coexisting with this dog is an easy task since it is quite affectionate.
